You know how like, if we die we get picked back up and dusted off and filled back up with blood- and basically made properly alive again? That.
If I were to die horribly in this whole war deal, could you, uh- wait a few weeks before revival? 'Cause I've never seen my own rotting body before, and this seems like the best chance....
[ Of course the Doctor's wondered just what happens if you die, together with just how it feels like to be grey. They're incredibly special circumstances and of course he's curious. He's the Doctor; why wouldn't he be?
He didn't know what to expect, but... a sort of afterlife was far from the first idea in his mind.
[niflheim doesn't look much different when you're dead. the biggest difference is that he wakes up in a place that kind of seems like a house and kind of seems like a castle and kind of seems like the ruins of one of those. it's shadowed, and quite dim even where it isn't, because it's within the valley of mountains so jagged they almost seem like paper cutouts. it doesn't matter that it's so dim, though, since he's only a spirit for the moment.
hel apparently doesn't have normal human restrictions on her eyesight either, because she's sitting in the shadows in the corner, curled as though on a sofa despite no sofa being visible. now that he's dead, it's almost like he can really see her, how much more she is than just a person, or just a spirit. he's not of her house, but there's a sense that for the moment, he is hers, niflheim is where he should be, and for once in his entire existence, there's no want to wander outside its borders. when he speaks, she looks up]
[Samantha does stop by Hel's shrine with a simple offering every month, following the guidelines of the favors. She's never been the 'religious' sort, even following the old ways. Between attitudes towards the gods of Asgard and their tactics, issues with Hel and strange issues from her mother's own attitudes back home, it's a rarity to be seen here other than the perfunctory level necessary. It says a lot that she's seen much more often in Loki district than Hel's.
Still, she's here, and it's the second time this month after the standard gift. Thankfully, the offerings she leaves aren't tainted by what she colorfully considers cooking. She bows and take a step back.]
There's a lot going on in the city, but I'd like a word ... when you have time.
[apparently she has time now, because hel steps out from behind sam and picks up her offering. for a moment she's holding it in her hand, and then her fingers close around it and she's not anymore]
[instead of a reply, the shadows around the shrine gather up and resolve themselves into a tall woman leaning against the altar. she doesn't look particularly friendly, but her glare isn't turned up to eleven, either]
I owe you a life debt. Ask what you will of me, and I will do it.
[Despite knowing that his world's magic doesn't exist within Asgard, he does not enjoy the feeling that he owes her something all the same. More than that, it has tipped the balance of his own personal consideration in terms of how he views himself, and how he views Her. After letting his feelings stew for a day, he has come to the conclusion that he would like to right this balancing scale within his psyche, that he would not like to feel as though he owes Her everything. It is a distinctly uncomfortable feeling, and he will not let it stay.]
[really, he couldn't have possibly thought he'd get out of it so easily. as much as hel doesn't consider there to be any sort of debt at all, she's perfectly content to let the idea of one twist around in his mind. he'll make something more of it on his own without any further effort on her part.]
One of Baldr's little megalomaniacs. His delusions of grandeur are magnificent in their ignorance. And he thinks he owes me a life debt for saving us from one of Odin's lectures.
uh so i have a bunch of jars with dead body parts in them still and i sort of wasnt sure what to do with them like if theres anything in particular i should or shouldnt do but youre kind of the person to ask if theres a set practice here when it comes to the dead and for all i know youd rather take them yourself or something but yeah sorry
[Which is to say, he's not going to be doing Hel any favors now that she's brought in the very last person he wants to see alive. And yes, he is telling her, not the other way around. It's not as though he would have seriously follow through with it anyway, not when the magic doesn't exist in this realm. But for the sake of appearances, he's angry, and he wishes her actions to have some sort of perceived consequence.]
[Ah, she's the last god he's contacted but this one makes him the most nervous. Mostly because of what he has to say.]
So the Guardians and I want to throw a winter celebration now that the snows come and I was wondering if I could ask you something. We want to give everyone a gift but don't have the magic to do it. So we thought maybe you gods could help?
Also... [He shifts nervously.] I want to say thanks. For taking care of all the people that died in the other Asgard. Are you the one who brought them back to life too?
[it doesn't surprise hel that there's a traveller asking her for things. it does surprise her that he realized that yes, someone actually does the work of bringing back the dead, they don't just pop back into the castle automatically. hel isn't friendly and she isn't nice, but she's less cruel than she might seem.]
Every time any of you find death a less that permanent experience, it was me.
[she pauses. asking hel for gifts is a bit like asking sigyn for plagues--against their natural inclinations.]
It is within our power, certainly. Why are you asking me? I am certainly not one of the more generous amongst us.
[Alice has never really spoken to Hel, but for this to work... She clears her throat.]
I beg your pardon, Miss Hel, if I could have a moment of your time?
You see, I had an idea where the gods and the travellers all met in a council of sorts. But there's not much reason to even offer the idea to others if the gods wanting nothing to do with it. Which is why I am contacting you, to see if you are amiable to the thought.
[ Because things are going so topsy-turvy, and ghosts, the Doctor thinks it's a good idea to check on the one who is actually in charge of bringing people back. ]
Hel? Are you all right? I don't know if you even have time for messages or anything nowadays but I figured I might as well check.
[the reply comes immediately, although hel isn't quite visible on the screen at first. her tone is clipped, but there might be something like amusement buried somewhere deep in there.]
Are you inquiring about my health, Doctor? I have not yet gone the way of the Allfather.
[but when she comes into focus, the shadows are sharp on her face, like a living high-contrast black-and-white photograph. she's obviously also working on some other task, but figures he's hardly one to mind.]
[It's a pretty pathetic offering, but Hizumi doesn't have much in the way of funds. Besides, isn't there a tradition of pouring out a drink for the dead?
It's with that vague idea that he brings bottled alcohol from Utgard, the best he could afford with what little he had. He won't pour it out on the altar, however - Hel isn't technically dead, right? So that would actually be pretty rude, right?
Either way, he has a couple of questions to ask, and he can only hope it would be enough. Despite the heaviness of the questions themselves, he keeps his tone light:]
I'm not sure if it's enough, but... If it is, mind if I ask you some things? They're kinda important.
[It takes a moment, but the shadows around the altar seem to deepen, gaining an odd sense of solidity, before suddenly returning to their natural state. When she answers, the response comes from behind him. Hel is tall, pale and sharp, and has the sort of presence that is naturally looming. She looks tired.]

You would have to come up with something quite profound to pay me to let you rot, and you would not look particularly different from any other corpse.
